[ Not to Broca admittedly, but Broca had gotten annoyed quickly into the conversation, and decided to just read what J was saying to others instead. It revealed bits and pieces about the man, though unfortunately not that little missing piece of information Midnight wanted to know too.
That his death could be related to the reward didn't even occur to Broca before. This is why he needs idea guys in his life. ]
Metaphysical, huh? Not sure how much help I'll be, but I can listen at least. It's not like I'm ever busy here either.

[ It definitely wasn't anything like the spirits of Tara. Very odd. ]
Well appreciated. Would you care for a walk with me in the Vale? Evening is the best time for one, I think. It should be quiet enough for a nice chat once the fowlbeasts settle in for the night.

[ He's got nothing by time these days without the means to engage in any of his hobbies. ]
text; > action;
[ And right at 7, Midnight arrives, in simpler clothes and with his hair tied back, ready for a walk. He knows that Broca exercises enough to not mind a surprise cardio session, but this isn't exactly that sort of meeting.
When he spots Broca, he smiles and waves before gesturing at the door and the Vale beyond. ]
'Lo. After you?
no subject
The gesture earns a shrug as Broca steps forward, looking over his shoulder at Midnight. ]
So what did he tell you anyway?
[ No mincing words or giving them time for pleasantries and small talk first. ]
no subject
Mostly reiterated a few things he'd already said on his network announcements. Confirmations, really. I did get curious about one thing, though... Do you remember a reply he made along the lines of using regrets and despair as bargaining chips? I wondered how literal he was being, so...
[ Midnight shrugs. ]
Mind, he wasn't exactly the sort to answer questions for free — still rather intent on trading secrets for secrets, that one — but I did manage to confirm a few things on that front. He was being very literal, as it turns out.
no subject
There's something wrong with that guy.
[ Probably a lot of things honestly. ]
no subject
[ Not that Midnight disagrees, nor does he say it pointedly — it's really just an offhand rejoinder — but aggressively trying to see the good in other people is a habit for him by now. Anyway, he's not interested in being a hypocrite, either. ]
Come to think of it, that things like guilt and regret here hold any material value at all is something that I think is out of his hands. I wasn't able to confirm anything material on this front, but something here needs those things. Whether it's some sort of beast controlling things from behind the scenes or the resort itself, I can't say, but they're being used to sustain this place, somehow.
no subject
Besides what Midnight is saying has his ears twitching as he considers it, frowning to himself. ]
It's not the sex they need?
[ He was sort of assuming that was what the powers that be happened to be feeding off of more than things like guilt and regret. ]
no subject
I kept my mind open walking in, but I found it quite odd that the definition of what he found to be of value included amorphous concepts at all. If sex was the point, what would be the point of using hopes and desires as tokens? One could easily accomplish everything being done here against our will. Sex, mechanically, is a series of physical reactions, after all. It's easy to simply induce, especially with the resources they've employed here.
[ He shrugs. ]
So our choices in this process, whether we're happy about our circumstances or not, also matter. I don't think ethics are a particular sticking point with the house, or else I'd consider that a possible motivator. No, that we are free to play a game at all is important, and I went in with that concept in mind, among other things. It's less about the sex, more about our relationships with sex and each other.
no subject
That said, he was honest about not necessarily being the best person to talk to about things like this. The explanation he can follow well enough, but it still makes him sigh and rub a hand over tired eyes. ]
And what is the point in that? What does something like that get anyone?
[ Sex he could almost understand. A life force, an energy, but ideas and feelings are so nebulous that it feels useless to use them as currency. ]
no subject
[ Midnight raises a finger, waves it thoughtfully. ]
If "society" is a conglomeration of people, that is simply a mass without a goal. Add a "game" and you now have rules, goals, directives... Friends, enemies. It's a worthy distraction. It lures people away from ideas of unity or trust, at least on a mass scale.
no subject
[ Because if all of them fucked each other and won the game it seems like it would be easy enough to do. Sure, not everyone can have a fancy room upstairs, but Broca doesn't particularly care about that. He mostly just wants to win whatever the "grand prize" essentially is, and he'll only get violent if it turns out that prize can't be a ticket home. ]
no subject
From that perspective, no one and nothing in the world needs enemies at all. And yet, invariably, situations wherein enemies exist flourish.
[ Midnight sticks a hand in his pocket, thinking for a moment. ]
Suppose for a moment that the goal of this game — that is, a part of the main purpose of the game makers — was for no one to make enemies of each other at all. If that is the case, then why make the game a matter of individuals pitted against individuals? It would be much easier to pit us all against a common enemy, for instance. If the house is meant to be that common enemy, then why make a game where colluding with the house is rewarded?
[ Midnight shrugs. ]
The problem lies in your premise, I think. Rather than a situation where the house's goal is to let us win, I believe that the house's goal is to keep the game going indefinitely. Meaning, naturally, that winning the game doesn't necessarily end it. At worst, winning the game means nothing at all.
no subject
What the House could actually be after is hard for him to say if they're not going to just come out and say it, but people fucking endlessly doesn't seem right. He could see if it was something that powered them, or something they somehow made a profit off of, and even this makes some degree of sense despite the fact that he doesn't understand what they get out of it all in the first place.
But the last comment has him furrowing his brows in deep contemplation. He's considered the possibility before that winning won't actually get him anywhere. They didn't promise that winning would get you home, after all. It's just an avenue he's also attempting while looking for other ways out that don't involve fucking over 52 different people during his stay here.
He's annoyed but not completely put off by the suggestion that it might get him the results he wants, but... ]
Wouldn't that end the game anyway? Knowing there's no real prize.
[ Someone finds out it's total bunk, then who is going to keep bothering to play? ]
no subject
[ ... Midnight looks over at Broca. He's grinning slightly. ]
So, of course, if the point is to continue playing the game ad infinitum, there must be a consequence for stopping. A few consequences come to mind for me, Operator. How about you?
[ Suit flares, for one; for another, changes in rank and the changes in one's quality of life with it. ]
It still isn't really about the sex, mind, but the continuation of the game... That certainly is enforced. The game is more of a facade for what is actually coercion.
[ ... Midnight really shouldn't be saying something like that so cheerfully. ]
no subject
His ears twitch back, not quite fully flat against his skull, but certain pressed back enough to make it clear he's not happy thinking about this fact. The coercion is... annoying, but he's probably not as bothered about it as he should be. He'd be far less so if he knew there it was the answer to getting out of here. ]
Why this game in particular though?
